City Place House

London, UK

Color Kinetics’ intelligent LED lighting technology is increasingly applied to create light sculptures and other art pieces, as demonstrated by a unique installation in the atrium of City Place House in London. The space houses the corporate headquarters of Prudential Assurance, a UK-based financial services firm.

The design called for ten, water-filled bubbling tanks to be up-lit with vibrant color – a challenge given the high level of ambient light streaming from the atrium’s glass-paneled ceiling. The tanks are visible from the open landings of the ten story building, and were intended to give the large, stark space a tranquil and engaging atmosphere.

The ideal solution proved to be iColor Cove® MX Powercore, the highest-intensity fixture within Color Kinetics’ popular iColor Cove family. As a complete line voltage system, iColor Cove MX Powercore does not require external low-voltage power/data supplies. Instead it requires one Data Enabler that delivers unified mains power and data for up to 90 iColor Cove MX Powercore fixtures. This eases the installation process, cuts costs and mitigates the complexity associated with powering the inaccessibly located fixtures.

To frame the installation, approximately 190 iColor Cove QL fixtures were applied to provide low-level ambient lighting around the edge of a 98-foot (30-meter) high screen with custom built baffles.

The entire installation is controlled by iPlayer® 2, a storage/playback device that holds eight light shows designed with ColorPlay® authoring software.
